Spanish School Bus by Chungaboo

Age 2+

Rating ★★★★★

FREE

In the free version of Spanish School Bus, numbers, colors, and shapes provide you enough playtime to get a good feel for the app. The instructions are in audio format, and the app is well designed, providing good graphics and quick response times for those fast fingers. My daughter can lose interest quickly with a slow-moving app; the rapid response time in Spanish School Bus keeps her engaged. This app is great to start building fundamentals in Spanish, and for $5, you can unlock the complete app and access more than 60 levels and 300 words.

Canticos

Age 2+

Rating ★★★★★

FREE

Canticos has five bilingual apps that teach children typical Latin American nursery rhymes in both Spanish and English. I love the Canticos apps because they use familiar nursery rhymes I already sing to my kiddos. Each app offers “sing to me,” “read to me,” and “read to myself” functionality paired with beautiful and interactive animations, which my daughter loves. Some of the apps, like “Little Elephants/Elefantitos” also incorporate counting. These apps are free and a great complement to the Canticos series of accordion books, which can be found on Amazon.

Mundo Lanugo

Rating ★★★★★

Age 2+

FREE

Mundo Lanugo was created to teach young children about Latin culture through fun, interactive games. All instructions are in Spanish, but children with little knowledge of the language can easily figure out what’s required in each section of the app. The Mundo Lanugo app incorporates matching games, dress-up, food, painting, shapes, vocabulary, music, and animated cartoons that demonstrate typical Spanish sayings. What makes this app special is that it incorporates language learning with learning about Latin traditions. For me, this is key, because studying Spanish doesn’t just develop your language skills, it opens the doors to new customs, traditions, and beliefs. Mundo Lanugo has a lot of great YouTube videos, too, which I recommend checking out!

MamaLingua

Rating ★★★★★

Age 0+

FREE

We included the MamaLingua app on this list because parent involvement is key to language acquisition. The MamaLingua app was created for parents to learn Spanish alongside their children, but it also provides categories that children can use by themselves, like animals, colors and parts of the body. The MamaLingua app is organized by everday activities and routines that make Spanish language-learning relevant to daily life, like playing, bathing, and eating and drinking, providing both parents and kids with the fundamentals to begin using Spanish to communicate. The app includes text, easy to read phonetics, and audio translation, plus the app is bilingual, so both Spanish and English learners can use MamaLingua. Upgrade to the Premium version for just $1.99 for more than 900 words and phrases.

Endless Spanish by Originator

Rating ★★★★★

Age 3+

FREE

I'm a big fan of the Originator company; they have a lot of great apps. The Endless Spanish app for kids uses letter matching and interactive cartoons to teach the Spanish alphabet and pronunciation, plus key Spanish vocabulary words. The free version comes with six Spanish words, while additional packs are available for purchase, including a starter pack for $6 and a full pack of Spanish words for $12. Originator’s other apps, from spelling to numbers to vocabulary, are all in English and are equally good.

Epic

Rating ★★★★

Age 3+

30 Day Free Trial

Part of the language learning journey includes finding reading material that complements all the learning kids are doing every day, especially when they’re in an immersive language environment. I was introduced to the Epic! app through our dual language school, and I’ve found it really useful for playing Spanish videos and reading Spanish ebooks. The app also includes a “Read to me/Leerme” section that provides self-reading Spanish books, as well as Spanish audiobooks. Some of the translations are a little off, but the app is a good tool to have when you’re not near your own Spanish library. (I also like this app because I can use it for both Spanish and English language reading.) Epic! offers a 30-day free trial and an $8 monthly subscription thereafter, with up to four profiles per account. (It’s also free for elementary school teachers and school librarians.)

Princess Lila by OctoMini

Rating ★★★★

Age 2+

$2.99

This is my daughter's favorite Spanish app. The graphics are very well made and the app incorporates princesses, which it so happens my daughter loves. A big plus for me is that its bilingual, so you can choose to play the game in English or Spanish. Princess Lila incorporates the alphabet, drawing, spelling, memory, numbers, animal names, and sorting. Levels range from easy to difficult, and given the princess theme, the app is likely to be more appealing to girls – though my son does play it alongside his sister, of course!

FeedMe! (Mexican Spanish)

Rating ★★★★

Age 2+

$2.99

This app was recommended to me by one of my followers, though I have yet to fully test it out with my daughter. The app reviews basic concepts like sorting and counting numbers, colors, and shapes, as well as telling time and pattern identification. With two levels, the app is appropriate for preschoolers and kindergarteners.
