The Elephant and Piggie Series in Spanish
Finding books that are relevant to both parents and kids can be challenging. Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie stories are a wonderful series of books to begin learning and expanding Spanish vocabulary with your child.
Elephant and Piggie are favorites at my house. I recommend the whole series (in Spanish) for families learning Spanish together. The basic vocabulary, repetition, and illustrations allow any beginner to comprehend the story. And Spanish reading time is important, especially when you're learning alongside your child. The topics of each book are relevant to any kiddo, including sharing, thinking outside the box, inclusivity, and patience. And together you'll learn the words and phrases to use during those moments all children face. My two favorites are "¡Un tipo grande se llevo mi pelota!" ("A Big Guy Took My Ball!") and "¿Puedo jugar yo también?" ("Can I Play Too?) Both are wonderful stories about being inclusive and finding ways for everyone to play together.
Another favorite character is pigeon from Willems' much beloved “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” book, also available in Spanish as "No dejes que la paloma conduzca el autobus."
Numerous books from the Elephant and Piggie series have been awarded the (Theodor Seuss) Geisel Award and Geisel honors. The Elephant and Piggie series are easy to fall in love with because of the characters' playful banter and Willems' unexpected endings. The books are also easy to memorize, which is a great tool for Spanish learners, early Spanish readers, and parents who are motivated to learn alongside their kids.
We've also included all the books available in Spanish in our favorites book page.
